13.Aug.2021

Plastic waste is increasing day by day and affecting the environment

Plastic products have changed people’s lives, but with it comes a series of consequences that affect the living environment of people that we do not care about.

WHAT HAPPENED???

1933: Discovery of plastic
Polyethylene, the most commonly used plastic, was first created by accident at a chemical plant in Northwich, England.

1965: Patented
Patented one-piece Polyethylene shopping bag, plastic bag is rapidly replacing fabric in Europe.

1979: Widely used
Plastic bags control 80% of the European market, which is widely introduced to the United States.

1982: Replacing paper bags
Two major supermarket chains in the US, Safeway and Kroger, use plastic bags. Plastic bags become a trend and almost replace paper bags

1997: Detecting plastic waste
Sailor and researcher Charles Moore discovered the largest trash can in the Pacific Ocean, containing a huge amount of plastic waste, threatening marine life.

2002: Ban
Bangladesh – The first country to ban thin plastic bags, after it was discovered that this type of garbage clogs drainage systems, causing catastrophic floods.

2011: The world uses 1 million plastic bags every minute

2018: the world uses 10 million plastic bags every minute

PLASTIC WASTE EVERYWHERE

– 13 million tons of plastic waste is dumped into the ocean every year, accounting for 50% of marine litter

– The amount of plastic waste each year can cover 4 times the surface of the earth

– Many types of plastic can last up to 500 years in the environment

– Recycling plastic takes 88% less energy than producing new

WHAT IN VIETNAM?

On average, Vietnamese people generate 1.2kg of waste per day x 100 million people = 120,000 tons per day.

Of which 16% is plastic waste–> every day nearly 19,000 tons of plastic waste is discharged in Vietnam.

Do you need supermarket nylon bags? Do you need nylon bags, plastic cups or straws from a milk tea shop? Do you reuse or dispose of nylon bags?

TIPS FOR EVERYONE

– Use a shopping basket or biodegradable bag or if you like to use your old shirt to make a shopping bag is also very good.
– Use paper cups and dishes instead of disposable plastic dishes
– Use paper straws, bamboo, stainless steel, rice flour,… instead
– Always bring your own water bottle (glasses, cups) to use or buy water
– Use glass containers, plastic containers to preserve food and use it to bring rice to work.
– Bring a set of travel-sized bottles when traveling, going to practice, going swimming.. in lieu of packages of shampoo and shower gel available for sale.
– Bring a personal toothbrush when traveling….

ACT WHEN IT’S NOT TOO LATE

  • The fact that products made from plastic exist in our lives is so familiar that it becomes a habit that is difficult to break.
  • To change is not day one, day two, but we should still try to change gradually, step by step will do.
  • First comes awareness, then action, and finally new habit formation in our lives.
  • Protecting the environment may sound like a big deal, but each individual’s awareness and change will contribute significantly to our living environment.
  • Let’s start with the smallest actions such as planting trees, not littering, participating in environmental campaigns like #ChallengeforChange….to see a meaningful and better life the way we want!

For that reason, during the past time, Chan Tam Pharma has always used self-destructing biological bags to deliver goods to customers and partners, both to ensure the environment and limit plastic waste to the outside.
